Hairstyle For Your (Hopefully) Last Wedding Of The Season

As wedding guests, our pre-nuptial jitters are usually limited to our outfits, beauty looks, and picking out the perfect gift (although that's what registries are for). Depending on the type of wedding, we may spend hours planning and primping — it's not often that we get to dress up and have a pro photographer documenting all our fun. While this definitely involves stepping up our everyday ponytail, a distinct hairstyle — like a statement earring or an ugly-pretty shoe — can make or break a look pretty fast. Did we mention all the photos we're anticipating?

So, to help, we enlisted hairstylist Natasha Leibel to create three cool, unexpected 'dos that are easy to DIY. Best of all, they're fancy enough for a wedding (or any occasion that calls for a party dress) but won't compete with the bride. Thanks to Leibel's easy-to-follow steps and budget-friendly styling picks from Walmart (weddings are expensive after all), these looks will nip any leftover big-day jitters in the bud. Now all you need to do is send in that RSVP.

Start by creating a deep side-part. On the side where you have the majority of hair, section out the third of it that's closest to your face — you're going to add this into your fishtail braid. Secure the rest of your hair out of the way with an elastic.

Now begin working on your fishtail. Sprinkle texturizing powder at your roots for grit and hold, then grab two one-inch sections of hair from your hairline. Holding one in each hand, take a smaller piece of hair from the outside of the left section, and cross it over to the inside of the right section, incorporating it into the full chunk of hair in that hand.

Repeat this action from the right to the left, and continue braiding for two to three crossovers, pulling each strand taut.

Depending on your desired look, Leibel suggests a couple of options: For a more textured braid, pull extra-small pieces of hair from each section as you continue your fishtail. Or if you prefer a smoother, cleaner look, take larger sections.

To continue the fishtail all the way down toward your ends, you're going to need to incorporate elements of the French braiding technique, forming a cool fishtail-French hybrid that allows the braid to lay flat against your scalp. To do this, grab both halves of your fishtail in one hand (use a finger to keep them separated), and, with your free hand, add a one-inch section of hair from your hairline to each half. Continue fishtailing your hair the rest of the way down, adding in more hair every few crossovers.

The beauty of this look is that there's no scientific method here, so you can make things as messy or precise as you like.

Next, take the two-thirds of hair you swept aside earlier, and twist it into a loose bun at the nape of your neck. Secure with an elastic or several U-shaped pins for hold.

Pro tip: If you use pins, mist them with hairspray, then crisscross them over each other for extra-strong hold. If you opt for an elastic, use a clear one, or pick a shade that matches your hair color so it blends right into your bun.

Now, keeping your fishtail braid flat against your head, drape it over the top of your bun, so it covers the seam where the bun meets your head. Use a few more U-shaped pins to secure it in place. Ultimately, it will look as though the fishtail swirls right into your bun. Cool, no? Finish by gently loosening everything up to add fullness, then mist your whole head with hairspray for all-night hold.

This hairstyle serves up some major ethereal realness, so keep the rest of your look grounded for a cool contrast. A loose jumpsuit in deep navy makes for an edgier look than a flowy boho dress.
