How Often Should You Exfoliate Your Face and Body?

Your skin has a tough job: it protects you from all the harmful material that the world throws at you every day – all while still being vibrant and smooth.
Doing this job takes a toll on your skin, though: all these foreign materials end up on your skin.
The adult human body sheds 50,000 skin cells each minute as a part of the regeneration process. However, your skin sometimes does not fall off naturally. These dead skin cells get stuck and clog up the pores of the body, causing blemishes.
In cases like these, exfoliation solves the trick by washing away the contaminants that clog up your pores.
Face exfoliation
As a general rule, face exfoliation should only happen twice a week.
But there are other factors to consider:
  • People with sensitive skin should cut back on their exfoliation, specially if the skin becomes irritated.
  • People in warmer climates or naturally oily skin will need to exfoliate more because there is a faster buildup of dead skin cells.
Body exfoliation
The skin in the body is less sensitive as compared to the face. This means that the body’s skin can take on more exfoliations than the face. It is recommended that you only exfoliate two to three times per week.
  • Sensitive skin should exfoliate less often
  • Do not scrub too hard when exfoliating. This could damage your healthy, living skin cells and cause damage
Golden rule
Observing how the skin reacts before doing regular exfoliating activities will be extremely important.
Observe if the skin turns red, gets irritated, or becomes dry when you use the exfoliating substance.
After observation you should consider having regular exfoliating sessions.
What if my skin becomes red?
Sometimes, even during normal exfoliation sessions, your skin may turn a but red. Maybe you scrubbed too hard or your skin was acting up to the material.
The most important thing to do in cases like these is to give your skin a break for a couple of days.
Using neutral creams and cleansers will be effective on your skin as it does not cause it irritation. Avoid using any substances that may irritate your skin.
Sunscreen
Whatever happens, apply sunscreen when you go out after exfoliation. The skin is still raw and thin. — exposing it to the sun may cause damage.
Aside from these healthy exfoliation regimens, here are other tips to make sure you take good care of your skin:
  • You skin is not wood – it does not need to be sanded. Rather, it needs to be taken care of gently.
  • While exfoliating is good, doing it too often may cause other complications.
Here are also some signs of overexfoliation:
  • dryness
  • irritation
  • redness
  • oversensitivity
